  Transportation:
   
  • Are bus drivers incorporated and understand their roles in school safety/security plans and training?
  • Do plans include transportation to extra-curricular activities?
  • Are there regular meetings with drivers, transportation supervisors, and school administrators to assess safety and security and ensure Student Code of Conduct is being enforced?
  • How many meetings a year being held, is at least one being conducted prior to the start of the school year?
   
Student Release Policy:
 
  • Is there sign-out procedure to govern early release of students?
  • Is there a roster of authorized persons for each student kept by the staff?
  • Is there a procedure for identification if staff members are unsure?
   
Parent/Guardian Notification:
 
  • There is a procedure to notify parents/guardians that effect student safety?
  • The basis of these notifications include; statement/threats of suicide, homicide, gang activity, significant injury, or fear of harm.
  • Does the procedure include notifying law enforcement if appropriate?
  • Does the procedure include notification restrictions if abuse allegation – by parent/guardian – has been communicated?
   
Unsafe Areas on School Grounds:
 
  • Are there any areas/locations that a majority of students feel unsafe?
  • Is there an area or location that has a high discipline/incident rate?
  • Is there an area that teachers/staff perceive to be ‘owned’ by a group or individual which may threaten others or daily activities?
   
Staff Intervention and Prevention Methods:
 
  • Is there a written policy governing the use of physical intervention by school staff?
  • Does this policy include examples for self-protection, protection of others, limited protection of school property?
  • Is the policy in accordance with governing state statutes?
  • Is a report submitted to the principal for all uses of physical intervention?
  • Is there a written policy governing student searches (personal, locker, vehicle)?
  • What is the standing prohibition (if any) to strip searches?
  • Are there signs on the school grounds stating ‘Vehicles are Subject to Search’?
  • Does the school have a policy in place for weapons searches, involving a SRO or local law enforcement?
  • Is there a policy requiring all staff (personal) vehicles to be locked?
  • Is the a policy to account for and control keys to all school owned vehicles?
  • Is there a 24 hour ‘Hot Line’ for students to report safety issues and concerns?
  • Is the number contained in the Student Handbook and posted throughout the school?
  • Is there a policy governing procedures for lost or missing students?
