  Active Measures:

  • Are all security devices, locks, windows, doors screened monthly to ensure proper operation?
  • Are monthly security checks documented, recorded and any deficiencies reported to the principal?
  • Is there a policy for a daily facility inspection?
  • Is there any fencing or physical barriers; if so, is it in good working order to include the locks?
  • Are all buildings (to include outbuildings), doors, and windows locked nightly to prevent entry?

Passive Measures:

  • Have emergency/master keys available to police and fire personnel?
  • Who has access to and control of master keys?
  • Does the school have a key control policy and procedure?
  • Is a detailed key log maintained?
  • Do students have access to any keys?
  • Are there any areas of landscaping that do not allow for complete observation and pose a threat to safety or security?
  • Do the school grounds have adequate lighting to ensure a safe environment?
  • Does the school meets all state requirements for educational facilities through annual inspection?
  • Does the school have a plan for correcting deficiencies noted during the annual inspection?

Additionally, the LearnSafe® site survey team will conduct interviews with local first responders to gauge the level of understanding of and interaction with the Emergency Management plan(s) at the school or district level.
